I have broken down my Portfolio page into individual headings in an effort to make it easier to find what you are looking for. If you hover over ‘Works’ you will see a drop down menu-simply select the type of work you are interested in seeing and click! On each page you will find the most recent entries first-if you want to find something a little older just scroll down. If you aren’t finding what you are looking for feel free to leave me a comment and I will get back to you with what you need.
Under paintings you will find individual pages you can visit to see more specific works. I work in Oils, Mixed Media, Photography and Encaustics.
- Encaustics: For those of you unfamiliar with Encaustics, it is a hot wax based medium that dates back centuries to the Greco Roman period! Traditionally beeswax based, pigments are added (along with resins for stability) to create ‘paint’. An oil based medium, Encaustic is versatile, lustrous and can be used to create lovely textural effects. I use a mixture of traditional and experimental methods to create my Encaustic paintings and use braced wooden panels for my supports. If you have any questions or would be interested in learning more about Encaustic techniques please leave a comment and I will get back to you as soon as I can. I will be forming workshops in the future and if you would like to be included drop a quick comment and you will be added to the contact list.
- Oils: I work with oils for my more traditional canvas paintings and occasionally incorporate other media like charcoal and acrylic.
- Mixed Media: I love to experiment and love to re-purpose used, discarded and unusual items to create this body of work. Using used vintage clothing items, teabags, coffee filters, vintage found objects, used fabric softener sheets and other items, I assemble objects that possess an historical or documentary feel to them. Occasionally this work will reflect what I might be working on in my paintings and when that happens it is kind of exciting.
- Photography: This is my newest adventure and one I have loved since I was in the fourth grade! Mostly I love to play around but once in a while I will develop a specific body of work because I find it fascinating. I am excited to see where this goes and hope that the journey is interesting for others as well!
I consider myself a mixed media artist, mostly because I have a difficult time limiting myself to one thing. When I get an idea I like to use a medium that will express it the most effectively and that might mean photography, sculpture, paint or even performance. I have multiple bodies of work in multiple media forms, and while some consider this a negative-I consider it a huge positive!! I am engaged with my ideas and some ideas just don’t translate well into a single medium. I would rather be challenged to give life to a good idea in the best way possible rather than let it let it pass!!
Thank you for taking a moment to look this over! As I said before-if you have questions don’t hesitate to leave a comment or email me at susan(at)susanmulder(dot)com.
